Chevy Chase is a comedic legend.

From his early days on SNL to his success in films like Caddyshack (1980), Foul Play (1978), and the National Lampoon series, he has left an undeniable mark on American comedy.

But unfortunately, he has also left a trail of hurt feelings and broken relationships in his wake. Even his co-stars on the hit sitcom Community couldn't stand him.

When Chase was first offered the role of Pierce Hawthorne on Community, it seemed like a match made in heaven. After years of struggling to find his footing once again in Hollywood, he was finally given a chance to play a character that was tailor-made for him.

Pierce was a wealthy, arrogant, and politically incorrect older man. Ironically a character much like Chase himself. For a while it worked well, as Chase was hilarious on screen, and the show became a cult hit.

However, things were not as rosy behind the scenes as they appeared. According to his co-star Donald Glover (Troy), Chase was often difficult to work with and made racially charged comments that were intended to undermine Glover's confidence.

It got so bad that Chase was eventually fired from the show during its fourth season after his general 'unpleasantness' on set and use of inappropriate language had reached their limits.

It's not just his co-stars who have had issues with Chase over the years. He has clashed with all manners of directors, producers, and writers. He has been known to throw tantrums on set, belittle his colleagues, and generally make life difficult for the people who work around him.

And yet, he seems utterly oblivious to the effect he has had on others. In an interview on CBS Sunday Morning in 2022, Chase was asked about his time on Community. His response was characteristically dismissive; 'I don't give a crap! I am who I am. And I like where — who I am. I don't care.'

It's a shame that someone as talented as Chevy Chase can't seem to get out of his own way. Unfortunately, he has burned so many bridges over the years that it's hard to imagine anyone wanting to work with him again. But perhaps there is still hope.

Glover once remarked, "There's a human in there somewhere."

One day, maybe Chase will eventually realize that his behavior has not been acceptable and make amends before it's too late. Until then, we can still enjoy his classic films and TV shows, but it's best to tune out the rest of the noise. After all, Chevy's gonna be Chevy, and there's not much anyone can do about that.
