After CODA’s acclaim, Vendôme Pictures and Pathé reteam for Ibelin, a biographical drama about World of Warcraft player Mats Steen and his heroic avatar Ibelin—backed by a star-studded cast.

Quick heads-up: this is not another Warcraft adaptation. It is a true-story drama set inside the world a lot of us have spent way too many hours in. And the cast is stacked.

The story they are telling

'Ibelin' follows the life of Mats Steen, a Norwegian gamer who became a beloved figure in World of Warcraft under his avatar name, Ibelin. Mats died in 2014 at just 25 due to Duchenne muscular dystrophy, but inside Azeroth he built a reputation for humor, kindness, and courage that reached far beyond his physical limitations. The film pulls from his blog, 'Musings of Life,' and frames his journey as something his family initially misunderstood as retreating from the world, when he was actually building a community and redefining what his life could be.

Expect a heartfelt family drama braided with an online adventure vibe. The pitch promises something tender, funny, and emotionally heavy in a good way, with an emphasis on friendship and the unseen connections between people who may never share a room but still change each other’s lives.

Who is onboard

  • Cast: Charlie Plummer (The Long Walk), Stephen Graham (Adolescence), Toni Collette (Little Miss Sunshine), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Maisy Stella (My Old Ass), and Sir Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs)
  • Director: Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game)
  • Writers: Ilaria Bernardini and Hossein Amini, adapting from Mats Steen’s blog 'Musings of Life'

  • Financing and partners: Vendome Pictures and Pathé are financing; Black Bear is collaborating alongside Pathé

Timing, and why this is interesting

Production is aiming to start in Europe in Spring/Summer 2026, so settle in for a wait. The project reunites the teams behind CODA (Vendome Pictures and Pathé), which explains the ambition and the cast firepower here.

Why the gaming world is already paying attention

Before this biopic, Netflix released a documentary about Mats called 'The Remarkable Life of Ibelin.' It spotlighted the community he built and the people he touched through WoW. Blizzard liked it enough to add in-game nods to Mats/Ibelin, which tells you how much his story resonated with actual players and the studio behind the game.

'Ibelin is a sensational story,' producer Philippe Rousselet says, praising Tyldum’s knack for stirring emotion in 'The Imitation Game' and handling scale with projects like 'Passengers' and 'Silo.' He also calls the cast 'formidable' and thinks this one lands with audiences everywhere.

Bottom line: a veteran filmmaker, an awards-season-friendly producing team, and a legit emotional hook from a real gamer’s life. It is a long runway to cameras rolling, but if they land what they are aiming for, this could hit both the MMO crowd and the 'cry into your hoodie' crowd at the same time.
