Laughter is arguably one of life's greatest pleasures. Perhaps that is why comedy is one of the most popular genres of fiction. Every year, more and more comedy shows are released on both mainstream television and streaming services, but only a handful of them grow to cultural significance.
Originating in the UK, The Office had a more successful run in the United States, where it ran for a whopping nine seasons. With a solid IMDb score of 9.0, The Office became a classic while still on the air. Naturally, fans of the NBC mockumentary were heartbroken when it ended over a decade ago. And, of course, they're over the moon now that the network has announced that it's making a new, as-yet-unnamed version of the show.
But it seems that The Office fans really should hold their excitement in check, as the new mockumentary is unlikely to feature any of the original sitcom's stars. At least Steve Carell doesn't seem to be reprising his role on the new show.
Fatherly Excitement
Since The Office ended, Steve Carell has been working on a number of high-profile projects. He co-created the TBS police procedural sitcom Angie Tribeca with his wife, Nancy Carell. He headlined Apple TV+'s hit drama The Morning Show and starred in FX's miniseries The Patient. In film, Steve Carell has lent his voice to Gru in the Despicable Me franchise. And this year, the actor voices Blue in The Office co-star John Krasinski's live-action animated comedy IF.
Clearly, Steve Carell's fame has skyrocketed since the NBC mockumentary. But that's not the reason he won't be making cameo appearances on the new show. The actor just feels that the new comedy doesn't and shouldn't have anything to do with him and Michael Scott. It's simply time to pass the baton.
'I will be watching but I will not be showing up,' Steve Carell recently commented on the new version of The Office. 'It's just a new thing and there's really no reason for my character to show up in something like that. But I'm excited about it, it sounds like a great conceit.'
The New Show's General Plot
According to NBC, the new show from The Office creator Greg Daniels will follow the employees of a historic Midwestern newspaper that is in crisis and on the verge of collapse unless management's new plan to attract volunteer reporters works. Domhnall Gleeson, who co-starred with Carell in The Patient, and Sabrina Impacciatore of The White Lotus Season 2 fame are set to star.
