Outlander's final season is in danger of facing the same disaster as Game of Thrones.

As is often the case with page to screen adaptations, fans invest their emotions and hopes into seeing their beloved stories come to life, yet sometimes the outcome falls short. This was painfully evident with the global phenomenon that was Game of Thrones, starting with resounding success but stumbling in its final season. Now, devoted fans of another beloved adaptation, Outlander, are growing increasingly concerned. Will the time travel show face a similar fate as GoT?

Diana Gabaldon's Outlander novels have captivated readers since 1991, garnering immense popularity over the years. There are nine full-length books that have currently been released, with the tenth novel underway, which will most likely be the end of Jamie and Claire's story. In an ideal world, the show's final season and the release of book 10 would coincide, providing fans with a satisfying culmination, though the filming of the finale is estimated to begin later this year.

Naturally, as fans have become deeply attached to the characters and their stories, they're anxious to see the show conclude in a manner that does justice to the narrative. And their worries aren't groundless, as they've already witnessed how the ending of GoT unfolded.

As you may recall, the showrunners of the epic fantasy series came up with their own ending without the actual source material, relying solely on George R.R. Martin's story outlines and eventually failing to live up to the intricate world that was once created.

Other fans, on the other hand, are convinced that Outlander won't suffer the same catastrophic fate as GoT, asserting that the two situations are entirely different.

Firstly, they're confident in the show's producers and Gabaldon as she remains actively involved with the series and has a clear vision for the story's direction. They believe that, unlike GoT, the Outlander showrunners genuinely care about the story and have demonstrated a commitment to staying faithful to the source material as much as possible. And secondly, fans argue that Gabaldon has created a story that could theoretically continue indefinitely or conclude at any point without major loose ends.

But what does Gabaldon herself have to say about the final installment?

Well, fans won't be thrilled to find out that she's in no rush to finish the series. In an interview with T&C in 2021, she revealed that while book 10 is in the works, it's still very much in its early stages, metaphorically comparing it to the slow bubbling of tar pits at La Brea.

'On top of the pile would be in the beginnings of book 10. I have started writing that, but I'm just poking away at it little by little because there's so much interference from the book launch stuff going on that I can't work with my usual focus,' she explained.

More recently, the author has confirmed on Twitter that the book is still nowhere near the finish line.

It remains uncertain whether the book will be completed before the commencement of the final season's shooting. But given the fact that there was a significant seven-year gap between the 8th and 9th novel, it's reasonable to expect a lengthy wait. Ultimately, the showrunners have done a remarkable job so far, so we have no real reason to doubt their creative efforts just yet!
