Firefly Lane, a drama series that chronicles the enduring yet complex friendship between two women over several decades, beautifully showcases the power of love and friendship in overcoming obstacles.

With the second part of season 2 on its way, fans are eager to learn the fate of Tully and Kate, especially considering Kate's stage three breast cancer diagnosis revealed in the season one finale.

Is Kate going to die?

The series is based on Kristin Hannah's bestseller of the same name. The book has a tragic ending: Kate passes away.

The silver lining is that she reconciles with Tully, whom she wasn't on speaking terms with for an extended period, and asks her to take care of her husband, Johnny and her children after she is gone.

The safest bet is that Kate will probably die in the series, too, but the show's creator Maggie Friedman has stated that the adaptation does not religiously adhere to the source material, so there is room for interpretation and an alternative ending.

Now, the question is whether Friedman's vision for how the story should end is the same as Hannah's.

The show's second part will probably draw inspiration from the book's sequel, Fly Away. In it, Tully deals with the aftermath of Kate's untimely death while managing her own career and supporting her late friend's family. The recently released teaser suggests the events in the new episodes take place ten years later, we get a glimpse of Tully in a wedding dress, and the voiceover narration implies that Johnny is the groom.

However, fans note the teaser may intentionally misdirect the audience.

'This is actually making me think that perhaps Kate makes it. The trailer really is pushing the idea that she doesn't, so I'm thinking it's got to be the opposite in the end,' a fan commented on Reddit.

Even though the teaser hints that Kate's dead, Friedman may actually have crafted a. happier ending for her protagonists, one in which their friendship prevails even over a brush with the Grim Reaper.

Seeing how we've already got more than enough fictional characters who die from cancer, it's probably time we started being treated to more cancer survival stories. After all, hope's supposed to spring eternal, isn't it?

The second part of the season will be released on Netflix on 27 April and comprise seven episodes.
