Will Hank Pym Return to the MCU? Here's One Reason He Might Not

Michael Douglas has shed some light on the future of his Marvel character.

Summary

  • Despite being a supporting character, Hank Pym is beloved by many Marvel fans.
  • Michael Douglas isn't sure about his character's future.
  • The likelihood of Hank Pym not appearing in the next films is quite high.

At this point, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded so much that it's nearly impossible to remember all of the characters it contains. But there are a few that stand out from the plethora of superheroes and supervillains in the Marvel world. For example, Michael Douglas' Hank Pym is definitely one of the most memorable characters in the MCU.

Introduced in Ant-Man, Hank Pym, or Dr. Henry Jonathan Pym, the creator of the Ant-Man suit, played a pivotal role in the Ant-Man leg of the MCU. In the second film, Ant-Man and the Wasp, the character helped Paul Rudd's Scott Lang further explore the world of sub-particles. In Avengers: Endgame, Hank Pym was among the annihilated half of the population. Fortunately, he was resurrected and appeared in last year's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantimania. But it seems that the character may not return in the next film.

Michael Douglas Is Done with the Role

Although Hank Pym is one of the most beloved characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thanks to his sense of humor and nonchalant demeanor, Michael Douglas seems to think it's time to say goodbye to the character. The actor has reportedly expressed his desire to be killed off in the fourth installment of Ant-Man, but that's not really true.

According to his recent interview, he asked to be killed off in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantimania. Now, even though he wasn't, Michael Douglas doesn't think he should reprise the role.

'I said I'd like to have a serious [death], with all these great special effects. There's got to be some fantastic way where I can shrink to an ant size and explode, whatever it is. I want to use all those effects. But, that was on the last one. Now, I don't think I'm going to show up,' the actor said jokingly.

The MCU without Hank Pym

Given that Michael Douglas' character is no longer a major part of the plot, it's fair to say that the MCU would do just fine without him. Besides, there are so many serious problems in the MCU right now that Hank Pym's departure wouldn't have much of an impact on the Universe.

At the same time, Michael Douglas' cameo proved popular with audiences. And if Marvel has any traditions, they are predictive post-credits scenes and character cameos. For instance, Chris Hemsworth's Thor will make a brief appearance in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine.

With that in mind, it's likely that Hank Pym will be kept for the sake of it, and Michael Douglas will revisit the character in the future.
