Chris Evans didn’t make the Avengers: Doomsday cast list, yet fresh TIFF sightings have set the internet buzzing — is Captain America mounting a surprise comeback?

Chris Evans was not on the official Avengers: Doomsday cast sheet, and yet here we are again, reading tea leaves and refreshing rumor accounts like it is a sport. Evans keeps saying he is out. The internet keeps refusing to believe him. So, what actually happened and what is just noise?

The rumor trail that kicked this back up

  • Evans popped up at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, and fans blasted out photos from the weekend. Cue a wave of: looks great, looks Cap-like, is he back?
  • Scooper Daniel Richtman (DanielRPK) claimed on X that both Evans and Hayley Atwell would return for Doomsday, with Marvel filming scenes of Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter at their house.
  • The Wrap previously said Evans had a role in Doomsday, but even they did not know what it was. Translation: lots of chatter, no studio confirmation.

What Evans actually said

While promoting Materialists (not exactly a world-beater at the box office), Evans sat down with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley alongside his co-star Dakota Johnson. Crowley asked if he has been talking to his old Marvel crew - think Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo Brothers - who, as the question framed it, are heading back into MCU-land.

"Yeah, I talk to them all the time. It is where Pedro [Pascal] is right now. I mean, it is sad to be away. It is sad to not be back with the band, but you know, I am sure they are doing something incredible and I am sure it is going to be that much harder when it comes out and you feel like you were not invited to the party."

That little Pedro aside is Evans nodding to Pascal being in the thick of it these days. And yeah, it sounds like Evans has a case of FOMO about not suiting up with his old teammates. But if you are hoping that means he slipped and confirmed a return, temper it. Evans is not exactly a spoiler sprinkler. He is not Tom Holland.

The 'happily retired' chorus, revisited

This is not the first time he has shut a window after rumors fling it open. Earlier this year, Anthony Mackie did an Esquire piece to pump up Captain America: Brave New World and mentioned he learned about Evans possibly coming back from his own manager, then added he had not even seen a script. Evans told the same outlet it was not true, said this cycle pops up every couple years since Endgame, and that he has basically stopped engaging with it. His words: happily retired.

Of course, just to keep things spicy, Evans did pop back in once after Endgame with a quick, memorable appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. It was a fun bit. His character did not make it out alive. So if you are using that cameo as proof of a grand return, that is a stretch.

So... is he in Doomsday or not?

Here is the clean version:

The official Doomsday cast reveal did not include Chris Evans. A trusted trade once said he might be involved, a well-known scooper doubled down and added Hayley Atwell to the mix with a specific Steve-and-Peggy-at-home setup, and fans are parsing red carpets like they are trailers. Meanwhile, Evans himself keeps saying he is done, and when he talks about Marvel now, it is mostly about missing the vibe, not teasing a secret set visit.

Could Marvel be hiding a surprise? Always possible. Do we have anything nailed down? Not yet. Until someone at Marvel hits send on a press release - or we see a shield in the actual movie - this stays in the rumor cabinet.

Place your bets: stealth cameo, multiverse detour, or truly retired? I am listening.
