With Wicked: For Good on the horizon, director Jon M. Chu finally addresses the franchise’s future, weighing the odds of a Part 3 or spinoff beyond the two-part musical.

If you were hoping Wicked would turn into a never-ending franchise, Jon M. Chu basically said: not the plan. But he didn’t lock the door, either. Here’s what he told me-by-proxy on the red carpet in Brazil.

What Chu actually said about a Part 3 or spin-off

At the world premiere of Wicked: For Good in São Paulo, Brazil, the director told Access Hollywood that there are no plans for a third movie or an offshoot. The adaptation was always designed as a two-parter, full stop. He framed it as a year-long event audiences can share together: bring your friends and family, fall for these two women, dress up, live in the world, and then land the story where it’s meant to land.

"As far as I know, this was always meant to be a two-movie experience."

That’s the headline. But Chu also did that director thing where he leaves just enough wiggle room to keep hope (and think pieces) alive. He called Wicked: For Good the end of an era and still added a couple of 'You never know' caveats. Translation: see movie two first, then maybe the audience will tell them where to go next. Maybe.

So is more Wicked actually possible?

Right now, no. The plan is two movies and out, with Wicked: For Good finishing the story as Elphaba uncovers what the Wizard has really been up to. If the sequel connects in a big way, Chu isn’t ruling out revisiting Oz someday, but nothing is in development. Consider the door cracked, not open.

Red carpet wrinkle: where was Ariana?

Ariana Grande missed the premiere thanks to flight delays. Chu said they tried hard to get her there and it just didn’t happen in time. He added that he’s shooting some moments at the event to send straight to her phone, which is a very 2025 solution to a very old-school premiere problem.

  • Event: Jon M. Chu spoke to Access Hollywood at the Wicked: For Good world premiere in São Paulo, Brazil
  • The stance: No active plans for a Part 3 or spin-off; the story was built as a two-movie arc, though Chu teased 'You never know' depending on how audiences respond to the second film
  • Plot focus this time: Elphaba continues her journey and discovers the Wizard’s deception
  • Main cast: Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh
  • Release date: Wicked: For Good hits theaters on Nov. 21, 2025
