Wicked is printing money, so it was only a matter of time before someone said the quiet part out loud: more Oz could be on the way. And not just Part 3. The guy who wrote the songs is teasing spin-offs.
What Stephen Schwartz actually said
In a new chat with Variety, composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz played the careful tease when asked about where the franchise goes after Jon M. Chu's two-part film. He literally stopped to consider what he was allowed to reveal, then hinted that fresh trips down the Yellow Brick Road are on the table — and he might already be involved with one.
'A spinoff is not out of the question.'
Schwartz also pointed out that Oz is a deep bench: L. Frank Baum wrote a bunch of additional Oz books beyond the first one, so there are plenty of weird corners to explore if the movies want to branch out.
The money part (because it matters)
Wicked: For Good has already cleared over $250 million worldwide and is still climbing. The first film, 2024's Wicked, sailed past $750 million globally. Given those numbers, of course conversations about more Wicked movies have started.
So who would come back?
Right now, no one is saying. It is unclear whether Ariana Grande (Glinda) or Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) would be part of any future projects beyond the two films they star in. For the record, Chu directed this two-parter, with Grande and Erivo front and center across both.
Where this leaves the franchise
- Schwartz is teasing more Oz stories and says a spin-off is possible.
- He hinted he might already be participating in at least one new project.
- Box office: Wicked (2024) has topped $750M worldwide; Wicked: For Good has passed $250M and counting.
- Talks about additional Wicked movies are underway.
- Whether Ariana Grande or Cynthia Erivo return for any future entries is unknown.
Bottom line: the Emerald City door is open. With the current films crushing it, do not be surprised if we get more Oz sooner rather than later.
