Apparently, the spinoff's showrunners are dead set on following TBBT's canon.

Summary

  • The new season of Young Sheldon will be its final one.
  • The YS executive producers are willing to stick to the events and timeline established on TBBT.
  • Finding Iain Armitage saved the whole show from being canceled.

There are two kinds of TV shows. Some, like Grey's Anatomy, are spun for an indefinite number of seasons, capitalizing on their popularity and usually ending when the audience loses interest in them. Others, like Fleabag or Ted Lasso, are designed to tell a specific story and wrap up once it's told. Some shows, however, end abruptly when the network decides to, no matter how popular they are.

In the case of Young Sheldon, there's definitely a chance that the fan-favorite family sitcom will continue, as it remains one of the top-rated shows on television after seven years on the air. Nevertheless, the comedy is coming to an end after the current season, which premiered yesterday. And it seems that YS is the kind of show that ends when its story is told.

Young Sheldon's Showrunners Want to Stick to TBBT's Canon

Since its debut in 2017, Young Sheldon has sparked a lot of discussion in the TBBT fandom, as fans of The Big Bang Theory often criticize the spinoff for deviating from the facts about Sheldon provided by the original sitcom. But in general, YS is pretty accurate in its portrayal of Dr. Cooper's childhood and family life. As a result, it cannot ignore the life-changing events that will take place in the character's life this season.

'There are certain things we know happen in Sheldon's life at fourteen,' said Steve Holland, one of Young Sheldon's executive producers, during a recent press panel on the Warner Bros. lot. 'We started talking about the future of the show, and what it looked like. This is the right time for this story to come to an end, knowing that at fourteen, he goes off to CalTech. It felt like the right time to end it strong while it was on top.'

Would you be okay with Young Sheldon continuing regardless of TBBT canon?

The Show That Almost Wasn't

Remarkably, it turns out that CBS's flagship sitcom was almost nipped in the bud because the showrunners struggled to find an actor to play the titular character. So much so that they almost gave up on young Sheldon. Fortunately, they came across Iain Armitage when his mother sent them a video of him doing a scrapped scene.

'This guy killed it. And if that had not happened, we wouldn't have gone forward. It's the miracle of casting Young Sheldon. It was one we understood was likely not going to happen but it did. And this family blossomed around him,' said Chuck Lorre of the casting of Iain Armitage.

Episode 2 of Young Sheldon's seventh season will air on February 22.
