Despite critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase, FX has axed English Teacher after just two seasons. Variety reports the studio offered no explanation.

FX quietly pulled the plug on English Teacher after two seasons, and yeah, it stings a little. Variety says the show is done, and FX did not give a reason. That lands as a surprise, especially since the reviews were glowing and the ratings were, by all accounts, solid.

For the uninitiated: English Teacher is a comedy about, yes, an English teacher trying to keep his personal life from colliding with his professional one, all while wading through some politically and personally charged storylines. It was created by and starred Brian Jordan Alvarez, and it was a good show — sharp, specific, and widely praised.

What happened around the show

The timing around its run was messy. The series premiered in September 2024. Days before season 1 launched, Alvarez was accused of sexual assault by Jon Ebeling — a former friend and his co-star from the 2015 web series The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo. Ebeling first posted the accusation on Instagram; the story later resurfaced more prominently in the December 2024 issue of New York Magazine, and was covered by Vulture.

Despite that, FX went ahead with the premiere. But it took the network four months after season 1 finished airing to officially order season 2 — a longer-than-usual wait for a renewal, which raised eyebrows at the time. FX did address the situation once, before the show debuted:

"We reviewed the allegations presented to us by another media outlet prior to the show’s launch. Mr. Ebeling never reached out to us with any concerns. We will have no further comment at this time."

Season 2 eventually arrived and critics loved it — it even notched a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans were on board too. And now, it is canceled.

Did the allegations sink the show?

FX has not said why English Teacher was canceled, so no one can call it definitively. What is fair to say: the accusations hung over the series from day one, and that shadow never really went away. Whether that directly led to the decision, contributed to it, or had nothing to do with it at all — only the network knows.
