When Calls The Heart Season 10 is the Proof The Show's Run Its Course
The Hallmark show has lost its appeal.
While Hallmark isn't necessarily associated with top-quality content, the network does produce some gems occasionally, and When Calls the Heart is definitely one of those.
Having premiered in 2014, When Calls the Heart is currently airing in its tenth season. Based on Janette Oke's novel series of the same name, the show is set in the early 20th century and follows Elizabeth, a young Canadian woman of wealthy origin, who decides to settle in a small frontier town of Coal Valley to become a teacher there.
Along the way, Elizabeth meets new people, helps them improve their lives, and finds love. But as much as this story sounds captivating, it has unfortunately grown stale over the past nine years.
Season 10 is WCTH's Worst
After a year-long hiatus, When Calls the Heart released its tenth season at the end of July. Though the new installment promised to be a great treat to all fans of melodrama, viewers were disappointed by the season's writing quality, saying that the storylines are unintriguing and simply bland.
'I have been watching WCTH from the beginning, and I have to say — Season 10 just seems so BLAND. The storylines just strike me as, well, boring. I was really stoked for an exciting episode when Rosemary had the baby — but nothing really happened other than she had the baby and Elizabeth helped her with the rough parts,' a fan ranted on Reddit.
Indeed, the Hallmark flagship seems to have lost all of its original appeal. The WCTH story is now centered on minor characters like the pastor and his wife, Nathan's daughter, or the little delinquent robber. In other words, Season 10's drama is unsubstantiated — it's drama for its own sake, which never really works.
'Plus, the town as a whole just seems kinda sanitized,' the same Redditor continued. 'Yes, I know this is Hallmark so I don't expect cutting edge but the dramatic pieces are few and far between — and the comedic moments nonexistent. I sure hope for something better next season! Assuming there is one…'
All in all, the show's pacing has become too slow and tedious even though there's ample material for dramatic developments, such as Bill's coughing up blood, for instance. And Elizabeth… She still lacks depth and personality despite having been the series' pivotal character for a whopping ten seasons.
Perhaps it's high time the beloved show wrapped up graciously while it still can.
