The actor received an "irresistible" offer to star in what could be the best movie of 2023.

Summary

  • Celebrities often put their careers on hold to devote time to their families.
  • Matt Damon had an agreement with his wife that he would take a break from acting.
  • The two made a deal that had one exception that ended up working out for the actor.

It's hard enough to balance your work and personal life, but it's even harder for celebrities and others in the entertainment industry. After all, popularity means a lot in celebrity work, but because it is a zeitgeist thing, they have to work non-stop to be successful in their field.

So unless you're Adele, who can disappear for several years in a row just to release a new album and prove she's a star, you have to be busy all the time, which means you have to sacrifice your personal and family life. That's why it's not uncommon for celebrities to take a break from their careers to put their families first. However, there are some once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that celebrities cannot afford to pass up.

Matt Damon's Break from Acting

Since the late 1980s, Matt Damon has appeared in dozens of films. Over the course of his extensive career, he's become one of Hollywood's ultimate stars. Moreover, Matt Damon seems to have a happy family life with his wife Luciana Bozán and their four daughters, which may be due to the fact that the actor takes a break from acting every now and then.

In fact, Damon was supposed to take a break after the biographical sports drama Air wraps production in 2022 - presumably that was the deal he made with his wife. But there was a special clause in their verbal contract that allowed the actor to star in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer.

A Prophetic 'What If'

'[My wife and I] had a very specific arrangement which was I always, like most actors who people keep an eye on, someone like Chris Nolan, had a feeling he might have a movie coming up. And he's really mercurial. No idea if there is a part in it for me but I just left that one door open. I said, "But if Chris Nolan were to call me, [I would jump at the opportunity],' Matt Damon revealed in a recent interview.

According to Damon, his wife supported his decision.

'Our marriage is the second most important thing [in my life],' the actor joked about his talk with his wife. 'That's not true. No, but I did [leave that window of opportunity open]. But look, to be fair, she is a massive fan of his movies, too. She was like, "No, obviously, if he calls, then you can do that." And then he did, which was great.'

So Matt Damon was able to act in Oppenheimer even though he was on a break with his family. And now this movie may very well be the best project the actor has ever worked on.
