'There's so much I could say,' he commented on the next season of the show.

Summary

  • Black Mirror has had a fascinating broadcast history.
  • The show was an inspiration for many protesters during last year's strikes.
  • According to Brooker, Season 7 will have things the show hasn't seen before.

Of the dozens, if not hundreds, of TV shows out there, Black Mirror seems to be the most unpredictable. Created by Charlie Brooker for Britain's Channel 4, the anthology series is set in a dystopian world strikingly reminiscent of our own, where the technology we use and rely on every day turns people's lives into nightmares. Needless to say, the show was a hit and quickly won over international audiences, which is why it was immediately picked up by Netflix when Black Mirror's run on the network ended after two seasons.

Since then, Black Mirror has spanned four more seasons on Netflix, the most recent of which premiered a year ago in June 2023, and stunned viewers with the relevance of the issues it covers. The episode 'Joan Is Awful,' which explores the dangers of AI and the risks people take when they inadvertently waive their rights by signing user agreements without reading them, was an instant hit and inspired many protesters during the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes. Now that Season 7 is underway, many people are wondering what it will bring to the table. Luckily, Charlie Brooker has something to tease us with.

The Creator of Black Mirror on What We Can Expect from Season 7

'We just wrapped on Callister, and we've just started on another one. I'm really excited. I'm always excited about all of them, but I think we have a really good mix,' Charlie Brooker shed some light on the upcoming seventh season of Black Mirror. 'We have a real mix of things, really exciting castings that have happened. I don't want to jinx it by saying too much.'

Callister, of course, is the sequel to the first episode of Season 4, USS Callister, the first sequel in Black Mirror's history that will once again follow the characters from the video game of the same name who became sentient and tried to gain freedom from their creator.

In addition to the sequel, Brooker teased that there's something else they've never done before that awaits audiences in Season 7. After all, the writers of Black Mirror continue to follow the same principle.

'Ultimately, you want the show to entertain people where they have a good time even if it's a bad time, if that makes sense. You want people to walk away feeling something,' Charlie Brooker said.

Season 7 is expected to premiere sometime in 2025.
