He died 5 times and somehow still made it to the finale?

The logic behind this storyline was as weak as this human character should have been, if the series were trying to be realistic.

In the town of Mystic Falls, living among vampires, werewolves, witches, and other supernatural beings, is Matt Donovan, a human who seemed to be ridiculously and unexplainably immortal.

The Vampire Diaries delivered some pretty heartbreaking deaths over its 8 season-long run, no characters, even the most loved, the main characters, and even the immortal ones, were safe from death. Names that come to mind include Stefan, Enzo, and Liz.

However, whilst some characters made it to the end, fans were surprised that the weakest link of them all was among them, and many felt he shouldn't have been. As a human amongst a group of vampires, Matt naturally was the weakest link, but the events he managed to survive just didn’t feel realistic.

In S1 he drowns himself in the town’s lake in an attempt to have a near-death experience and reconnect with his sister, who had recently become a vampire. In S2 he is fatally bitten by werewolf Tyler Lockwood but saved by Damon Salvatore, becoming a vampire hunter. In S4, he tries to help Elena turn her humanity back on, and she repays him by snapping his neck and killing him instantly. Third time is not the charm, as Matt’s third death is not permanent either as Bonnie brings him back to life.

In S5 Matt is possessed and forced to stab himself in the heart, but is revived after being dragged into the sunlight. He dies one more time in S8, after destroying the cursed town bell in a fit of rage, in a massive explosion that killed him and several others.

When we say killed, we mean ‘killed’ because once again his death was not permanent. The explosion was all planned, and he was brought back via a resuscitation spell.

Fans were delighted that The Vampire Diaries’ beloved token human made it all the way to the end. There is no doubt that he was a good, heroic character, and we’re not saying we want him to die permanently.

The problem is, each time he died and came back, it undermined the show’s plot, and the severity and permanence of death. If producers wanted to keep him til the end, they could have easily done so without having him die in 5 dramatic, different ways.

Was Matt Donovan really that resilient? No, his storyline was simply weak and unrealistic, and his making it to the series finale would have been usually impossible, but it happened anyway.
