Virgin River's Main Flaw Has Been Before Our Eyes All This Time
Upon close examination, the show's protagonist isn't all sweetness and light.
Summary
- Virgin River is one of Netflix's top series.
- The show has an unappealing main character.
- Despite the audience's adoration of her, Melinda is obnoxious.
Although Netflix releases hundreds of new titles every year, there are only a few memorable projects from the streaming service. And while it may not match the popularity of flagships like Stranger Things, Bridgerton, and The Witcher, Virgin River is undeniably one of the platform's most popular shows.
Debuting in 2019, it quickly became Netflix's top romance drama, boasting a huge and loyal fandom. Given its initial success, it's no surprise that the show has spanned five seasons, with a sixth installment currently in pre-production. However, it's fair to say that Virgin River isn't perfect, as it has many flaws that drive viewers crazy. But strangely enough, fans of the show have ignored its main weakness for years.
Weak Lead Character
Since its premiere, Virgin River has revolved around Melinda Monroe, a nurse who decides to change her life after her husband's untimely passing. Looking to start her life anew, she moves to the titular small town in Northern California, where she finds a job and begins a complicated relationship with local bar owner Jack Sheridan. And as drama follows Mel every step of the way, the audience is asked to sympathize with her, which is why viewers don't always notice that she's an annoying person.
You are probably outraged by this point, but hear us out. Mel is insufferable. Sure, she's had her fair share of tragedy, but that's no excuse for being so weak and self-pitying and playing the victim all the time. But that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Unpleasant Personality
First and foremost, Melinda has a terrible personality. She is self-centered and self-absorbed. She's condescending to other people and comes across as entitled and prudish. And she is quite judgmental in her treatment of other people.
In addition, Mel is a hypocrite. Consider her criticism of her own sister for getting engaged to a man she had only known for a few months. While it was reasonable to point this out to Joey, Mel did practically the same thing to Jack herself. Only in the main character's eyes, her relationship was better and more worthy of recognition than her sister's.
Anyway, the audience loves Mel and she is by far the most popular character on Virgin River. But when you think about it, it's surprising that the show managed to last five seasons with such a terrible lead.
