The sight can't help but make you giggle, even though there's no romantic feeling implied. This must be what makes it even funnier, because Ted Lasso fans know how the two characters treat each other.
When Ted Lasso first joined AFC Richmond, he was a laughingstock who knew nothing about football. So it came as no surprise to him that the respect of the team was not a given, especially when it came to AFC Richmond captain Roy Kent. Their relationship evolved over the seasons, but Ted never had enough authority over Roy Kent, even though he was his coach.
At the same time, Ted never let Roy push him around or be pushed around by other players. With as little influence as Ted had on Roy, the coach always tried to encourage the captain to be, well, a captain. When AFC Richmond had some minor internal problems and Kent approached Lasso for interference, he was told to solve them himself and establish his leadership.
Only in the face of Kent's defiance, Ted Lasso used sarcasm to guide him.
While it may seem like Ted is sucking up to Roy and making Kent feel superior to Lasso, it has worked well. Roy has become a more mature and responsible person and a good leader, even if he is unaware of Ted's tricks. Kent buys Lasso's act and rolls his eyes thinking it's just Ted.
