Unrecognisable: Euphoria Fans Stunned By Sydney Sweeney's Transformation For New Movie
Sydney Sweeney breaks the mould of typecasting.
Sydney Sweeney is best known for playing drop-dead gorgeous characters, most notably Cassie Howard in Euphoria. It's hard to imagine her looking anything but glamorous.
However, the upcoming based-on-a-true-story drama Reality, directed by Tina Satter, challenges our usual perception of Sydney.
In the film, Sweeney portrays Reality Winner (yes, that's a real name), a former translator with top-secret security clearance who worked for the NSA. Reality received a prison sentence of over five years (earning the dubious distinction of the longest prison term ever imposed for disclosing confidential government information to the media) for leaking classified documents related to Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Much of the film's dialogue is reportedly taken directly from the transcripts of Winner's FBI interrogations before her arrest.
Naturally, a glamorous appearance would be entirely inappropriate for the role. While making Sydney Sweeney appear less attractive is a challenge, the crew of Reality pulled it off, as is evident in the teaser trailer, where her character is pressured for answers.
Sweeney struggles to hold back tears, looking just like a servicewoman suddenly put under interrogation should: she wears a plain collared shirt, her blonde hair is pulled back, and she is wearing minimal makeup if any at all.
The teaser also offers glimpses of Reality's stereotypically girlish items, like a pink notebook with her doodles. These details only add to the distressing atmosphere, as her personal effects are being confiscated as evidence.
In a bid to defy her usual image, Sidney Sweeney worked hard. In an interview for the press she said,
'I had the honour and privilege to be able to actually communicate with Reality. And before… …I went and found as many interviews that I could of Reality so that I could watch how she speaks, how she moves, her different mannerisms.'
We'll see how successful Sweeney has been in the role when Reality premieres on HBO on 29 May, with a subsequent release on HBO Max.
