Unpopular Young Sheldon Opinion: George Should Have Cheated with Brenda
The two characters could really make each other happy, if only for a brief moment.
Summary
- Intended to adhere to TBBT's canon, Young Sheldon occasionally strays from it.
- Fans don't like inconsistencies in the spin-off, but they're willing to turn a blind eye to the absence of George's affair in YS.
- George and Brenda should have had a romance because both characters deserve a little happiness in their lives.
Although Young Sheldon has been very different from The Big Bang Theory from the start, as a prequel it has always been limited by the plot of its parent sitcom. Thus, YS, narrated by the adult Sheldon, has to stick to the events mentioned by the character in the original show. However, the spin-off does deviate from the canon from time to time.
Usually, viewers are upset by such inconsistencies. For example, many fans have wondered why Sheldon never mentioned Paige or Doctor Sturgis in TBBT, even though he was very close to them in his childhood. But there are also plot deviations that make the audience happy. Interestingly, most of them involve Shelly's father George Sr.
The most obvious example of this unlikely trend is the storyline about George's infidelity. On TBBT, Sheldon tells the gang that he once caught his father cheating with a woman, presumably their neighbor Brenda. But nothing of the sort seems to have happened on Young Sheldon. And while it makes the spinoff more wholesome, we think the absence of such romance in George's life does him a great disservice.
George and Brenda Are a Match Made in Heaven
Certainly, Young Sheldon is first and foremost a family show. More importantly, it is immensely popular for its quaint and fuzzy familial warmth. For that reason, infidelity would be fatal. But we must be honest about the Coopers. They're a pretty dysfunctional family. And George and Mary's marriage is anything but happy.
Sheldon's parents are just too different. They don't have much in common in their views of the world, which is why they can't fully appreciate each other. In George's case, it's especially heartbreaking because the man has sacrificed his entire life for a family that doesn't appreciate what he does for them. He deserves to be loved.
Brenda, on the other hand, is a much simpler and more open-minded woman who sees eye to eye with George. In fact, their relationship is awe-inspiring. And the chemistry the characters develop for each other over time is thrilling. In other words, Brenda and George seem to be able to make each other happy in their difficult and seemingly miserable lives.
Mary's Benefit
It might seem that George's affair with Brenda would break Mary's heart, but we have to remember that Shelly's mother wasn't happy in her marriage either. She also had a crush on Pastor Rob. For this reason, Mary would be better off if she and George split up, as she would eventually be able to find her own happiness instead of putting up with the mediocrity of her current relationship.
However, the opportunity is missed for good, and now another tragedy is about to befall the Cooper family. Young Sheldon Season 7 will premiere on February 15.
