Tyler Perry is doubling down on faith-based films at Netflix, reuniting with producer DeVon Franklin after Ruth & Boaz — the tale of a hip-hop artist seeking a fresh start in rural Tennessee — for a new feature led by Taraji P. Henson and a starry cast.

Netflix is sticking with the Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin playbook: faith-forward stories with mainstream faces. Their first Netflix team-up, 'Ruth & Boaz', opened at #2 on the Global Top 10 Movies List (English). Now they have another one on deck, led by someone Perry knows very well: Taraji P. Henson.

'Tis So Sweet': What you need to know

Perry and Franklin are co-producing 'Tis So Sweet', a true-story drama centered on Lenore Lindsey. The logline is the kind of quietly miraculous premise these two gravitate toward: a Chicago bakery owner stumbles onto something life-changing that helps her reclaim lost time, repair old wounds, and land on a purpose she did not see coming. Tasha Smith is directing.

  • Lead: Taraji P. Henson (this will be her fifth Perry movie)
  • Director: Tasha Smith
  • Producers: Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin
  • Also cast: Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott, aka Joey Bada$$ ('Mr. Robot', 'Grown-ish', 'Power Book III: Raising Kanan')
  • Platform: Netflix (release date TBA)

Why this partnership keeps happening

Perry and Franklin are aligned on one big thing: they put faith at the center of their stories. Franklin has been behind movies like 'Miracles From Heaven', 'Heaven Is For Real', and 'Breakthrough' — all about belief when the odds look brutal. Perry has never been shy about it either, even in his comedies. 'Diary of a Mad Black Woman' wrestled with forgiveness; 'I Can Do Bad All By Myself' leaned into the whole help-your-neighbor message. When Perry struck a deal with Franklin to bring faith-based films to Netflix, 'Ruth & Boaz' was the first out of the gate — a drama about a hip-hop artist trying to reset his life in rural Tennessee — and it immediately found an audience.

Taraji is busy in the Perry-verse

On top of leading 'Tis So Sweet', Henson is also set to star with Perry in 'Why Did I Get Married Again?', a Netflix sequel to the 2007 film 'Why Did I Get Married?'. So yes, the reunion tour is real.

What’s next

More casting is coming, and Netflix will slot a date when it is ready. For now, 'Tis So Sweet' keeps the Perry/Franklin pipeline humming — and if the last outing was any indication, Netflix is very comfortable making room for more of these.
