It's only February, but 2024 has already seen a slew of top-quality releases. Small-screen premieres have been particularly outstanding. Here are just five shows that debuted in January and they are absolutely worth watching.

Expats (Amazon Prime Video, 5.9 on IMDb)

Despite its mediocre rating, this show is a must-see for anyone who loves heartbreaking drama. Starring Nicole Kidman, Expats tells the story of three American women in Hong Kong whose lives become intertwined after a series of personal tragedies. The series explores themes of loss, friendship, and alienation, making it a very powerful show to watch.

Note that the show is still running, with two episodes yet to be released. Episode 5 will premiere on February 16.

True Detective: Night Country (HBO, 7.0 on IMDb)

The long-awaited fourth installment of the popular anthology series has been the talk of the town since its release in January. So far, four of the six episodes have aired, with the fifth premiering tonight, February 9.

Set in Alaska, Night Country finds Jodie Foster and Kali Reis' characters investigating the mysterious disappearance of scientists from the local research station. As the detectives realize that the abductions may be connected to an earlier series of murders, the season gets darker and more suspenseful.

The Brothers Sun (Netflix, 7.6 on IMDb)

The only comedy on the list, this show is still brimming with action and family drama. Starring Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh, The Brothers Sun revolves around a young Taiwanese-American man who has spent his entire life in the shadows of his family's criminal business. When he is forced to face the dangers of it firsthand, the character finds himself in all kinds of amusing and dangerous situations.

Feud: Capote vs. The Swans (FX, 7.8 on IMDb)

The second installment of yet another anthology series from Ryan Murphy has made a big splash, even though only three episodes have aired so far. Centering on the famous American author Truman Capote, the show tells the story of his conflict with the female part of New York's high society, nicknamed the Swans. As the writer continues to publish a novel that explores the corrupt lifestyles of the group, they take a stance to destroy his life in retaliation.

Boy Swallows Universe (Netflix, 8.1 on IMDb)

This Australian coming-of-age drama, based on Trent Dalton's novel of the same name, is a masterpiece for many reasons. The story of its main character, young boy Felix Cameron, will resonate with you as you become deeply invested in him and his personal struggles. Then, the painful family drama and the one-against-the-world trope will hit you in the softest spot. Finally, the portrayal of the Australian underworld is quite exotic.
