The biggest difference between Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon is the abundance of flying, fire-breathing lizards in the spin-off. Dragons indeed play a crucial role in the plot of the prequel series, which follows the rise of the Targaryens to power in Westeros and the hereditary crisis that led to a war between two clans within the family and their formidable pets.

On House of the Dragon, the titular beast is synonymous with power, which is why the outcome of the war is largely determined by the dragon power of each side in the conflict, rather than by manpower.
