Top 5 Fighters of House of the Dragon, Ranked by Swordsmanship
There are many worthy warriors in the series, but we only see a handful of them show off their swordplay skills.
The biggest difference between Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon is the abundance of flying, fire-breathing lizards in the spin-off. Dragons indeed play a crucial role in the plot of the prequel series, which follows the rise of the Targaryens to power in Westeros and the hereditary crisis that led to a war between two clans within the family and their formidable pets.
On House of the Dragon, the titular beast is synonymous with power, which is why the outcome of the war is largely determined by the dragon power of each side in the conflict, rather than by manpower. But if the prequel relied more on human melee combat, these five warriors would be the most revered swordsmen thanks to their fighting prowess.
5. Ser Laenor Velaryon
Though presumed dead, Queen Rhaenyra's ex-husband is one of the most skilled swordsmen on House of the Dragon. He may not be as respected a knight as, say, Ser Harwin Strong or Ser Harrold Westerling, who aren't on the list, but at least we see him in action with his blade, which allows us to say that Laenor Velaryon is a formidable fighter when it comes to swordsmanship.
4. Ser Arryk Cargyll
The twin brother of Ser Erryk Cargyll, Arryk proved himself a worthy fighter and member of the Kingsguard when he fought Ser Criston Cole, one of the most skilled swordsmen in Westeros. Erryk could also be on the list, but we never see him in action on the show like we do his brother.
3. Aemond Targaryen
The younger brother of King Aegon II, Aemond is a fierce and fearless warrior who isn't afraid to take on an enemy bigger than himself. What makes Aemond particularly dangerous is his recklessness, as he doesn't think through the consequences of his actions, so you can expect anything from him.
2. Ser Criston Cole
The only warrior to ever defeat Daemon Targaryen in hand-to-hand combat, Ser Criston began his Kingsguard career with a bang. Appointed by Princess Rhaenyra, he quickly proved himself a worthy warrior with impressive fighting skills, often seen on House of the Dragon, and was made Lord Commander. This leads us to believe that Criston Cole is one of the best swordsmen on the show.
1. Daemon Targaryen
The undisputed number one warrior, Daemon has a reputation for being fierce and fearless. And indeed, the show's many swordplay scenes prove that he goes into battle unafraid of his enemies and death itself. In fact, his swordsmanship is perhaps only surpassed by his dragon-riding skills. In addition, he has a strategic mind that helps him defeat even physically stronger opponents.
