Spider-Man 4 star Tom Holland opened up about filming the massive Brand New Day sequence in Glasgow, where real military tanks rolled through the streets.

Spider-Man 4 is ditching the green screen cocoon and doing it the loud, old-fashioned way: on the street, in the elements, with a star on top of a tank. Tom Holland is back as Peter Parker for the first time since 2021, the sequel finally has a title, and the early vibe is very much: get in, loser, we’re making a movie.

The title, the shift, the tank

Marvel and Sony’s next Spidey is officially called 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' — and yeah, that name says a lot about the approach this time. Production is underway in Glasgow, Scotland, and Holland sounds downright giddy about shooting in the real world instead of living on soundstages.

'Yesterday, I was on top of a tank driving down the high street in Glasgow, in front of thousands of fans, and it was awesome,' Holland told AFP (via Barron's). 'It was so incredible, it was exciting, and exhilarating, and it felt fresh.'

He has been pretty open about why this one feels different compared to 'No Way Home,' which had to thread the needle during peak pandemic restrictions.

'I think we were really restricted with what we could do in the last movie because of COVID,' he said. 'We shot the entire film on stages. Now, we're really gonna lean into that old-school filmmaking and shoot in real locations.'

So what's actually happening on set?

Filming kicked off last month, and the internet has been doing what it does best: feeding on set photos. We’ve already seen glimpses of a new Spider-Man suit and some teases that may point to who the villain is. Nothing official there yet, but the breadcrumbs are all over social media. Also, Glasgow playing New York is a tried-and-true move — and a tank roaring down a high street in front of thousands of fans is about as practical as it gets.

Who's in this thing

  • Tom Holland back as Peter Parker/Spider-Man (first time since 2021's 'No Way Home')
  • Zendaya returning as MJ
  • Jacob Batalon returning as Ned
  • Jon Bernthal as the Punisher
  • Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk
  • Sadie Sink in a role that's still under wraps

That lineup has some wild crossover energy for a Spidey movie — Punisher and Hulk showing up is not exactly subtle.

Release date

'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' swings into theaters on July 31, 2026.
