Tom Hiddleston Just Ended the Spider-Man Debate — Or Did He?
Loki star Tom Hiddleston reignites the Spider-Man debate, backing Tom Holland as the top webslinger over Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in a new chat with Josh Horowitz.
Tom Hiddleston weighed in on the eternal Spider-Man debate, and of course he did it in the most Loki way possible: he picked a favorite and then refused to say why.
The moment
During a chat with Josh Horowitz, a clip of which hit X on January 8, 2026 via the Cosmic Marvel account, Hiddleston named Tom Holland as his pick for best Spider-Man. Then he dangled the carrot.
"For reasons I cannot disclose."
Classic mischief god energy.
The immediate fan theory
Fans instantly joked that the answer is right there in plain sight: Tom likes Tom. As in, Hiddleston backing Holland because they share the same first name. Is that a silly reason? Absolutely. Is it the exact kind of coy non-answer you would expect from Hiddleston when he wants to keep a secret? Also yes.
Or is there something he can’t say yet?
This is where things get a little more speculative. If Hiddleston truly has a reason he can’t share, people are going to assume it’s Marvel-related. Some corners of the fandom are connecting dots to a project being talked about as Avengers: Doomsday, and guessing we could see Loki and Holland’s Spidey cross paths there. The bolder pitch has Spider-Man pulling Loki out of a jam and the two rolling into a buddy-cop dynamic. Fun idea, totally unconfirmed. We won’t know anything concrete until that hypothetical movie is actually out.
Where we left Loki
Quick refresher: at the end of Loki season 2, Hiddleston’s Loki takes on the weight of the multiverse, anchoring branching timelines on a throne at the end of time in a configuration that looks a lot like Yggdrasil. He effectively becomes the God of Stories, and fans have been waiting to see where he pops up next. With Kang seemingly off the board for now, it would make sense that Marvel is rethinking how to deploy some of its biggest pieces. Again, that’s the broader context people are using to explain Hiddleston playing coy.
What people are saying about Avengers: Doomsday
If you’ve seen the title floating around, here’s the package that’s being tossed around right now. None of this has been officially laid out by Marvel in this exact form, but these are the talking points you’ll see repeated:
- Directors: Joe Russo and Anthony Russo
- Cast (as rumored/mentioned): Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth
- Release date: December 18, 2026
- Studio: Marvel Studios
So yeah, Hiddleston picking Holland could be as simple as personal taste. Or it could be him winking at something he isn’t allowed to spoil yet. Either way, it’s a neat little spark to kick off the next round of Marvel guesswork. What do you think: harmless Tom-supporting-Tom energy, or a breadcrumb for what’s coming?
