Toby Kebbell praises Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom: “Finally, they’ll get a good Doom”
Robert Downey Jr. says Doctor Doom’s musical theme directly shaped his performance in Avengers: Doomsday, guiding how he approached the character on screen.
Asked what he thought of Robert Downey Jr. stepping into Doctor Doom, Toby Kebbell didn’t dance around it. The actor — who played Victor Von Doom in 2015’s Fantastic Four — cracked, “Finally, they’ll get a good Doom,” during an interview with The Movie Dweeb, a wink that landed because he knows the character’s on-screen baggage as well as anyone.
Kebbell’s jab nods to Doom’s uneven live-action history, which fans have debated for years:
- Julian McMahon — Doctor Doom in Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)
- Toby Kebbell — Doctor Doom in Fantastic Four (2015)
Downey’s approach
Downey, meanwhile, has been open about how early creative choices are shaping his performance in Avengers: Doomsday. On The Brandon Davis Show, he said the character’s musical theme locked him in almost immediately after cameras started rolling — and that Joe Russo personally cued it up for him on set.
“We’re on day 4 of production… Joe Russo’s like, ‘Come here.’ And he plays me Doom’s theme ... I was like, ‘Oh, yeah.. Okay, it’s that.’ And it even affected that day of shooting and every day since.”
Between Kebbell’s candid blessing and Downey’s note about Doom’s theme guiding his performance, Marvel’s next big bad is being teed up as more than just another world-crusher. Production on Avengers: Doomsday is underway.
