Thor: Ragnarok Director Taika Waititi Reveals His Next TV Series — First Details Are Here
Taika Waititi is heading back to TV: the Thor: Ragnarok and Love and Thunder filmmaker has unveiled his next series, with first details out on the latest from the mind behind What We Do in the Shadows, Reservation Dogs, Our Flag Means Death, and Time Bandits.
Taika Waititi just lined up his next TV move, and it comes with a new Hulu comedy, a Frankenstein riff that already has early buzz, and a fresh studio pact that basically gives FX and Hulu first dibs on whatever he cooks up next.
The deal (in plain English)
According to Deadline, Waititi closed a first-look deal with 20th Television, FX Productions, and Hulu. Translation: he will develop and direct series for 20th and FX, and while those shows can technically land anywhere, Disney Entertainment Television gets priority — especially FX and Hulu. In other words, his TV ideas go to them first.
- Last Look (Hulu): Half-hour comedy co-developed with Jason Kim, set inside a luxury fashion house. The tone is workplace satire with class clash baked in.
- Very Young Frankenstein (FX pilot for Hulu): A new take inspired by Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein, directed by Waititi; now in post with positive early feedback. Cast includes Kumail Nanjiani, Zach Galifianakis, Dolly Wells, Spencer House, Nikki Crawford, and Cary Elwes.
- Klara and the Sun (film): Sony movie based on the 2021 novel, with Jenna Ortega, Amy Adams, Natasha Lyonne, Steve Buscemi, Mia Tharia, Simon Baker, and more. No release date yet.
The new show: Last Look
Under the new deal, Waititi and Jason Kim are developing a half-hour comedy for Hulu called Last Look. It lives in the high-gloss, sharp-edges world of a top-tier fashion house, following the people who make the art happen and the people who take the credit. Or, as the official description puts it:
'Last Look is a modern upstairs/downstairs comedy set in a luxury fashion house. It depicts the lives of the underdogs who work tirelessly to make the fashions come to life - and the fabulous monsters who design them.'
Sounds like fertile ground for Waititi's favorite mix: earnest strivers up against big, ridiculous personalities.
Also in the works: Very Young Frankenstein
Waititi directed the pilot for Very Young Frankenstein, an FX project intended for Hulu that reimagines Mel Brooks' classic. It is already in post-production and, per early whispers, got a warm response. The cast is stacked: Kumail Nanjiani, Zach Galifianakis, Dolly Wells, Spencer House, Nikki Crawford, and Cary Elwes. If you are wondering why an FX pilot is for Hulu: FX produces a lot for Hulu now — think of it as the same family.
On the film side: Klara and the Sun
He is also directing Klara and the Sun for Sony, based on the 2021 novel. The cast includes Jenna Ortega, Amy Adams, Natasha Lyonne, Steve Buscemi, Mia Tharia, Simon Baker, and more. No release date yet.
