There had already been several themes of haunted houses, creepy asylums, wicked witches, and a freaky carnival before AHS: Hotel arrived as season 5. As the scene shows the couple's extravagant style, lavish tastes, and drug use, it quickly becomes apparent that they are an unconventional couple. While attending an outdoor theater showing the vampire classic Nosferatu, it is hinted that there may be more to them. Catching the eye of another couple, they bring them back to the hotel and engage in steamy and dynamic sex. As things heat up, the characters seem more than comfortable seducing their new partners. Only to suddenly pause before slitting their throats and drinking their blood. If ever there was a more provocative way to introduce the horror of vampires, I've yet to see it.

Though AHS has always proven itself to be contemporary in its style of horror, the Countess and Donovan's hunting scene has all the hallmarks of mystery, fashion, atmosphere, and even some amazingly creative cinematography, all at once. These characters don't exist just to be scary, or just to be sexy. They are both. And Lady Gaga and Bomer deliver such emotion and passion during this scene in buckets, while still being deadly scary.

AHS has had 10 seasons so far, but the characters of Elizabeth and Donovan have made a lasting impact on the show's fans. In response to their opening scene, fans have stated that it is the mix of disturbing, sad, scary, sexy, and aesthetically pleasing themes in this season that make it one of their favorites. In addition to praising what Queen Gaga brought to the show, most fans agree that there is only one word to describe this moment in the series, and that word is iconic.
