He will have much to discuss with this lady.

Summary

  • Part 2: Bridgerton's third season seems to have some juicy drama in store.
  • Colin's relationship with Penelope's family will be strained because of their history.
  • The trailer for the upcoming second part hints at a possible development in this arc.

The third season of Bridgerton was highly anticipated. After all, Season 2 was released a full two years ago, and fans had grown thirsty for a new installment of the hit show. But Season 3, which premiered a few weeks ago, was disappointing for one reason. It felt rushed, as the romantic leads, Penelope and Colin, were already together at the end of Part 1, and there was little drama in their story.

Still, there's a lot of excitement for fans when it comes to Colin and Pen's relationship in the second part of Season 3, as he's yet to learn that she's actually the person behind his sworn enemy, Lady Whistledown, whom he's vowed to bring down for the pain she's caused his family. But as exciting as that arc seems, there's another relationship that's likely to prove just as juicy.

A Classic Mother-in-Law Trope

Penelope doesn't have the best relationship with her family. And while it's easy to ignore sibling hostility, it's truly heartbreaking that her mother, Portia, is the person who has made her most miserable.

For years, Portia has ridiculed Penelope for being different, for wanting to be smart and achieve something other than a successful marriage. Pen's mother was constantly trying to change her daughter. And if she had succeeded, Penelope wouldn't be the girl Colin loves.

Of course, he may not be too happy about Portia's treatment of Pen, and this is bound to cause some tension between the future in-laws. To make matters worse, Portia doesn't have the highest opinion of Colin, which turns their future familial relationship into a classic 'bitchy mother-in-law/dumb son-in-law' comedy trope.

Do you think Colin and Portia are in for a rough start?

Season 3 Part 2 Trailer Revelations

The recently released trailer for the upcoming second part of Bridgerton's third season revealed several details crucial to understanding Colin and Portia's relationship. First and foremost, we see that Colin and Penelope haven't even told Portia that they're engaged, let alone asked for her blessing, and she found out about it through Lady Whistledown. At the same time, we see that Portia is happy for Penelope, telling her that her own dreams don't matter and that her only job is to support 'Mr. Bridgerton.'

With all this in mind, how might Colin and Portia's relationship develop? It's likely to be strained, and the two characters won't be on the best of terms. But it's also likely that they won't actively fight. As a true gentleman, Colin will probably forgive Portia for her past transgressions and be polite to her. But the initial tension between them will make the entire third season worth watching.

Part 2 premieres June 13.
