Live-action adaptations of iconic fantasy books have long been a staple of the television and film industry, bringing us incredibly compelling stories about worlds filled with medieval aesthetics, magic, and mythical creatures.
Here are eight fantasy book series that may soon be getting live-action adaptations.
8. The Atlas Six
Written by Olivie Blake, The Atlas Six became a viral sensation and gained a cult following thanks to TikTok. The novel is about six young magicians who want to join a secret magical society.
The adaptation is being produced by Amazon in partnership with Brightstar.
7. From Blood and Ash
Jennifer L. Armentrout's From Blood and Ash is an original novel that combines elements of high fantasy, romance and vampire drama.
The series is also being produced by Amazon, and the showrunner is Anne Cofell Saunders, who wrote The Boys and Timeless.
6. Red Queen
Victoria Aveyard's YA fantasy novel Red Queen tells the story of an alternate dystopian America where the political system is a monarchy. The plot centers on a 17-year-old thief who gets swept up in a hurricane of political intrigue.
Peacock has been developing the adaptation since 2021, with Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman serving as executive producers.
5. Ninth House
Leigh Bardugo is the author of a dark fantasy novel praised by Stephen King himself. The plot follows a girl who enrolls at Yale at the suggestion of a mysterious benefactor. It's all about her ability to see ghosts.
The rights to the TV adaptation have been acquired by Amazon Studios, and along with Bardugo, Pouya Shahbazian will serve as executive producer.
4. Legendborn
Written by Tracy Deonn, this YA novel follows a black student at the University of North Carolina who discovers that there is a secret organization of white mages at the college who trace their lineage to King Arthur's knights.
Black Bear Television has acquired the rights to the 2022 adaptation, which will be executive produced by Felicia D. Henderson.
3. The Folk of the Air
Holly Black's The Folk of the Air follows the adventures of a mortal girl living in Elfhame and a fairy prince.
In 2017, the franchise was picked up by Universal Pictures and the movie will be produced by Michael De Luca. However, no details or official announcements have been made since then.
2. The Poppy War
What makes The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang unique is that it is not inspired by Western European aesthetics, but by Chinese history, combining medieval elements with 20th century events.
The adaptation will be handled by Starlight Media, but no further details are available yet.
1. A Court of Thorns and Roses
This book series by Sarah J. Maas tells the story of a mortal girl who kills a fairy disguised as a wolf while hunting. As punishment, the protagonist is taken to Prythian, a realm inhabited by fairies.
The rights to the franchise have been acquired by Hulu, and Maas will be working with Ronald D. Moore, the same man responsible for Outlander, the popular adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's book series.
