One of the best drama series of recent years has ended, but the story is continued in a book sequel.

Firefly Lane proved to be one of the best shows on Netflix, offering both tragic aspects of human existence and life-affirming moments that have made viewers feel more confident and inspired to take life as it comes. And although we shed many tears during the finale, the beloved series' ending was truly kind and eye-opening.

If you haven't seen the wonderful series yet, be sure to dive into the warm story of friendship and beware of spoilers in this article! Those who have seen the finale already, wipe away the tears as there is a literary treat awaiting Firefly Fly fans — Kristin Hannah's sequel novel Fly Away.

Just to recap on the main story, both Kristin Hannah's Firefly Lane and Netflix's show of the same name focus on the friendship between Tully Hart and Kate Mularkey, which spans three decades and ends with the latter's heartbreaking death.

In the finale, Kate and Tully were able to reconcile after a quarrel and even reminisce about their youth, while sitting on the porch and smoking weed, and Kate had just enough time to finish her book, also titled Firefly Lane, before she died from cancer. That left her knowing that her memories would be preserved for the people she loved most — her husband Johnny, daughter Marah, and her closest friend Tully.

Left alone in her bed overlooking the sea while Tully went to get a drink, Kate was finally able to accept herself and close her eyes one last time to meet eternal peace. The series ended with Tully dancing to her and Kate's favorite songs outside the funeral.

But Tully's story and Kate's legacy do not end with Firefly Lane's finale. Kristin Hannah has written a sequel, Fly Away, which was published in 2013. The novel focuses on Tully's life several years after Kate's death as she learns to come to terms with the loss and move on, while also trying to build her career and help Johnny and Marah.

By the way, the author originally planned to publish a trilogy. There are only two books so far, but we may expect a third novel to be released some time in the future.

Fan-favorite Firefly Lane is a great series about friendship, family, and love that does not end after death. It's also a lighthearted story that inspires optimism in cancer patients and their loved ones. And while showrunner Maggie Friedman said the series could have ended differently, most fans are glad it didn't stray too far from the book, despite all the tears.
