The Witcher Season 4 has landed on Netflix, and as fans tear through Henry Cavill’s swansong and eye Liam Hemsworth’s debut, showrunner Lauren Hissrich tells Variety the wait for Season 5 should be shorter than the last long gap.

Season 4 of The Witcher just landed on Netflix, and before the credits even finish rolling, the big question is: how long are we waiting for Season 5? Given that the gap between Henry Cavill’s farewell and Liam Hemsworth’s debut stretched to about two and a half years, the fear is understandable.

Where things stand right now

  • Season 5 was officially renewed in April 2024 and will be the final season.
  • Season 5 was reportedly shot back-to-back with Season 4 and is now in post-production.
  • Showrunner Lauren Hissrich says production wrapped about a month before she spoke and the team is deep in post.
  • She wants the wait to be shorter than the last 2.5-year gap, which was extended by the writers strike.
  • Ballpark expectation right now: 2027, possibly earlier if post goes smoothly.
  • The last stretch adapts Andrzej Sapkowski’s final three books: Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake.
  • Expect a higher body count than Season 4; the ending is not designed to be cheerful.
  • Season 4 leaves Geralt newly knighted and Ciri kidnapped by bounty hunter Leo Bonhart, setting up the endgame.

So, when is Season 5 coming?

Hissrich told Variety she knows the last wait was rough and that they’re trying to move faster this time.

"Hopefully shorter. Two and a half years is never ideal. Obviously, we had a writers strike in the middle of that, which really pushed Season 4 back. So fingers crossed. We are working so hard in post, we wrapped almost a month ago. We’re pushing ahead and hope to be able to deliver it to audiences a little bit sooner."

Translation: it’s not imminent, but the show is past filming and living in the edit/VFX pipeline. If post cooperates, the next season arrives before that last monster-sized gap. If not, plan on a 2027 release.

Yes, Season 5 is the finale

Netflix confirmed in April 2024 that Season 5 will close out the series, and Hissrich has been clear about the goal: finish Sapkowski’s saga and push these characters to their limits on the way out. She’s also warning fans to brace for more death than we just saw in Season 4 and a conclusion that mirrors the darker tone of the books. Given where Season 4 leaves things — Geralt in a very different position and Ciri in serious danger — the setup is there for a full-on, bloody final chapter.

Is the show ending because Henry Cavill left?

Officially, no. No one at Netflix or on the production has said the series is ending due to Cavill’s exit after three seasons. Liam Hemsworth has stepped in as Geralt and the show kept moving. Ending at five seasons looks more like a creative decision that also lines up with practical realities: these are expensive, time-consuming seasons, and the long gaps between them do not help momentum. There’s also the audience factor — so far, Season 4 sits at 60% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes and just 19% with audiences. That’s not a death blow, but it is a signal.
