The story of Geralt, Ciri, and Yen finally feels closer to the source material, but at what price?

The Witcher Season 3 has landed on Netflix with five new episodes, but it hasn't even come close to creating the buzz the network was hoping for. Fans who have tuned in are divided on the new storylines, with some arguing that the recent episodes are of lower quality than the previous ones, and others claiming that the direction the show has taken this season is actually promising… if not for one 'but.'

'It's MUCH better than Season 2 and Episode 5 is actually really close to being straight off the pages of one of the books. Sadly, so much of its time is dedicated to course-correcting from the disastrous Season 2 decisions regarding Yen and Ciri,' a fan shared their opinion on the new season, and many seem to agree.

In its first two chapters, The Witcher frustrated many viewers by playing around with the Gerald/Ciri/Yennefer relationship, taking it far from Andrzej Sapkowski's book series and wasting a lot of time keeping the characters apart and making them earn the family that was a solid and intact unit of the book canon. And to make matters worse, the writers took Yen's Season 2 arc to the moment of betrayal, sending the fandom into an angry frenzy.

'Yen's betrayal [is] my biggest complaint about the second season,' a fan wrote on Reddit, echoing the general sentiment of the fandom.

Even though Yennefer turned out to be incapable of betraying Ciri and Geralt in the end, the fact that she thought about it hung over the first episodes of Season 3. As a result, too much screen time in the new season was spent on Geralt trying to get over it and repair the damage done to their relationship.

Finally, by Episode 5 of Season 3, the relationship between Geralt, Ciri, and Yen started to feel more like the one in the source material. Even though Netflix's The Witcher separated the characters again, this time they stayed reunited and bonded.

Episodes 6 through 8 of The Witcher Season 3 will debut on July 27, 2023.
