The Winchesters' Could Bring Castiel in the Future, Says Supernatural Star
Fans love when prequels display links to their origin show. And The Winchesters has been pretty good at doing that, with several characters from Supernatural making an appearance already in season 1.
Henry Winchester, Bobby Singer and Jack Kline have featured in the new show set in the 70s that charts the love story of John Winchester and Mary Campbell – the parents of Supernatural's Sam and Dean.
And according to Misha Collins, we could be set to see Castiel have a part in the series at some point in the future.
Fans of Supernatural will recall Castiel (played by Collins) as an Angel of the Lord who rescued Dean (Jenson Ackles) from hell in season 4 and went on to become a recurring character and, subsequently, a regular cast member for later seasons.
In contrast to the stereotypical angel seen in film and TV, Collins portrayed Castiel as a more complex character. He was even prepared to kill innocents. His character arc saw him grapple with the relationship between God and man, with his time spent in the company of humans making him query the utter devotion to his Lord that he displayed when we first met him.
In an interview with Deadline, which was mainly about Collins's latest role as Harvey Dent in Gotham Knights, the actor was asked whether he might return as Castiel. He said conversations had taken place with Jensen Ackles (who is also involved in the production of the show).
As an angel, Castiel is a character who could be easily introduced to the show. There are pretty much no rules about how, when or why he might appear. But it's certainly something that would go down well with the majority of viewers.
Collins was fairly non-committal about why he didn't make a return to the Supernatural universe in season 1 of The Winchesters, saying simply that it didn't work out for "various reasons". There's a good chance that at least one of those reasons was that he was already booked for a lead role in Gotham Knights.
At the time of writing neither show has been confirmed to have commissioned a second season, but it seems likely that both will. Certainly, talks about season 2 of The Winchesters are known to have taken place.
And if schedules allow, there also seems a very high probability that Castiel may be back on our screens in the not-too-distant future.
