Umbrella Academy standout David Castañeda is teaming with Aimee Carrero for an untitled home invasion chiller now rolling cameras.

File this under: movies designed to spike your heart rate. Lionsgate has an untitled home invasion thriller in production right now in Los Angeles, and the hook is simple and nasty: a family relying on their home security system watches, in real time, as masked attackers close in.

What the movie is

Aimee Carrero (Your Friends & Neighbors) stars as Lorena Riveras, a mom hyper-focused on her 12-year-old son after a recent accident. The home security system is her safety net when she can’t be hovering. Then the nightmare version of that setup kicks in: surprise intruders show up, and the cameras don’t save you — they just witness it. The film plays that scenario out in real time as Lorena and her son try to survive.

Cast update

Deadline says David Castañeda (The Umbrella Academy, Ballerina) has joined the cast. He’s playing Ben, a doctor and Lorena’s husband. Castañeda’s a solid addition for this kind of pressure-cooker setup — more on his resume below.

Who’s making it

This is the first feature from director Julian Labrádor, who also co-wrote the script with Owen Egerton; Nathan Elston came in for revisions. Labrádor is producing with Andre Fonseca, alongside Tabitha Shick for Talking Pictures’ horror label, Midnight Pictures. Jeff Robinov and Dan Clifton are executive producers. On the Lionsgate side, Lauren Bixby, Scott O'Brien, and Allison Lynch are overseeing.

Why this could work

I’m a sucker for a good home-invasion nightmare — The Strangers, The Purge, Hush, See for Me, Don’t Breathe — if there’s a tense house, a desperate plan, and a clock ticking, I’m in. Making the security cameras part of the real-time experience is a clean, creepy angle. If the execution’s sharp, this could be a nasty little anxiety machine.

David Castañeda primer

Status

Untitled for now. Cameras are rolling in Los Angeles.

Home invasion thrillers not your thing? Totally fair. But if you like white-knuckle, one-night-from-hell stories, this one sounds promising.
