Netflix will unleash The Twits on October 17, 2025, turning Roald Dahl’s 1980 classic into its first-ever screen adaptation—an animated musical born of Netflix’s 2021 acquisition of the Roald Dahl Story Company, from a book that has sold 16 million copies across 41 languages.

Netflix is finally turning Roald Dahl's nastiest couple loose on screen. 'The Twits' - an animated musical, and somehow the first-ever screen adaptation of Dahl's 1980 book - hits Netflix on October 17, 2025. It comes out of Netflix's 2021 deal to buy the Roald Dahl Story Company, which explains why we're getting this and more Dahl in the pipeline.

What this version is doing

Mr. and Mrs. Twit are still awful, but the movie scales things up. They run Twitlandia - billed as the most disgusting, most dangerous amusement park imaginable - and then their cruelty spills over as they seize control of their town. The pushback comes from two orphans, Beesha and Bubsy, plus a magical creature family called the Muggle-Wumps. The plan: out-trick the Twits at their own game and save the place. Expect the classic Dahl combo of slapstick, mean streak, and comeuppance.

Who is making it

Phil Johnston - the Academy Award nominee behind Ralph Breaks the Internet - is producing, directing, and co-writing. Animation is by Jellyfish Pictures, the team with credits on The Boss Baby and The Bad Guys. It is a full-on musical, and the soundtrack is not phoning it in: David Byrne wrote three originals - 'We're Not Like Ev'ryone Else', 'Lullaby', and 'The Problem Is You' - all performed by the cast. Byrne also teamed up with Paramore's Hayley Williams for the end credits song, 'Open the Door'.

Release, trailer, and the bigger Dahl plan

'The Twits' lands on Netflix on October 17, 2025 - in the US for sure. A first-look image dropped way back in September 2023, but there is still no trailer. Given Netflix's Dahl deal, more animated takes are coming, including a new spin on 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'.

For the book nerds

Dahl's original 'The Twits' has been translated into 41 languages and has sold over 16 million copies worldwide. Somehow it took until now to get a screen version - and the first one is an animated musical with David Byrne songs. Did not have that on my bingo card, but here we are.
