The Surprising Family Drama that Almost Split the Evans Brothers
Here's how Chris Evans publicly outed his brother and what happened next.
Actors' families can be as full of drama and scandal as soap operas. Did you know, for example, that Chris Evans publicly outed his brother Scott Evans in an interview?
Fortunately, the siblings were able to get over it and maintain their strong bond. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.
How it happened
Scott Evans had come out to his family long before the infamous interview. But before he could share it with the world, Chris did it for him. When asked by The Advocate in 2009 if the rumors about his brother being gay were true, Chris didn't miss a beat in confirming the speculation and sharing his support for the LGBTQ+ community.
'Yes, I do have a gay brother,' Chris said. 'I'm down with the gays. Mostly I'm hanging out with him and his gay buddies, who are fucking hilarious. They're the funniest people I know.'
The actor also recalled how Scott came out to the family, first to his mother and sister, and then to him, and how they all supported Scott through this 'difficult transition.'
How Scott reacted
It was only after the interview was published that Chris realized his brother had not been out before. The realization hit hard and sent the Marvel star into a panic.
'He outed me publicly,' Scott Evans told WeLoveSoaps.net (via The Advocate). 'When the article came out, he got a lot of flak for it from a lot of his friends who said, "I can't believe you did that!" Immediately I got a phone call from him and he left me this message freaking out: "Are you okay with this? Are you upset that I did that?"
Luckily, the little brother was ready to come out to the world by then and had no hard feelings towards Chris.
'I'm glad that he's comfortable enough to talk about it and not be ashamed about it or anything,' his comment was.
How the brothers get along now
Despite the outing scandal, which could have easily divided the brothers, they remain the best friends they've always been.
'There was never a time when it didn't feel like [Chris] wasn't my best friend,' Scott recently told Attitude, adding that they are close and continue to support each other.
He also recalled in a June interview with Aol how proud Chris was of him when he was cast in Greta Gerwig's highly anticipated Barbie movie, which premieres July 21.
'He was, I think, more excited than anybody… he was over the moon. He couldn't believe it,' Scott said.
