Somehow we never pay attention to the details of the career of the show's biggest supporting character.

Summary

  • Madame Delacroix is one of Bridgerton's most important supporting characters.
  • Her dressmaking business is thriving thanks to her popularity with the Ton.
  • Certain aspects of Genevieve's business don't seem quite right.

Netflix's hit show Bridgerton may be based on Julia Quinn's cycle of novels of the same name, but it is much more than just a TV adaptation of the books. Over the course of its three-season run, the Netflix romantic drama has created a fascinating world of social restrictions, affairs, intrigue and love. And it has filled that world with appealing characters, some of whom don't come from Quinn's novels.

Madame Delacroix, the Ton's most popular modiste, is a shining example of such characters. Invented by the writers of the Netflix show, she plays a rather important role for a character who isn't mentioned in the source material.

She helps Penelope with her Lady Whistledown business and has an affair with Benedict Bridgerton at one point. Most importantly, she dresses almost every lady in London high society. And the odd thing is, we never question how she does it.

How Does Madame Delacroix's Business Work?

It is obvious that Genevieve Delacroix makes dresses for her high-profile clients. The question is, how does she do it, or more precisely, how does she do it on such a grand scale?

The scenes showing Madame Delacroix's shop are few and far between, but whenever we see her at work, the place is teeming with customers, all of whom she is attending to at the same time. And while it's clear that she can pay attention to several people at once, it seems impossible that she can make dresses for all of them simultaneously. What's more, on the show, she seems to do it in the blink of an eye.

Normally, dressmakers – especially ones as popular as Madame Delacroix – had seamstresses who worked for them and helped make dresses for customers. But on Bridgerton we see no such thing.

Maybe Genevieve's employees work somewhere in the back of the shop where we can't see them? But then again, how many employees must there be to fill the enormous amount of orders she receives from customers in such a short amount of time?

A Practical Inconsistency

Most likely, the Bridgerton writers just didn't think it through, so Madame Delacroix's highly efficient business is a fantastical feature of the show. Ultimately, no one cares how Genevieve's business works as long as it works so well and provides the Ton with the ravishing gowns we so enjoy watching during the ball scenes. But it goes to show that Bridgerton is full of little inconsistencies that go under the radar when we watch the show.

Part 2 of Season 3 of Bridgerton will be released on June 13.

Do you think Madame Delacroix has employees?
