Aaron Sorkin is officially writing and directing The Social Network Part II for Sony. Yes, it's real. Yes, it's happening. And no, it won't be about Zuckerberg in a hoodie arguing over intellectual property again.

According to Deadline, the new film won't be a direct sequel but more of a "spiritual successor." Translation: same tone, same sharp dialogue, different angle. This time, Sorkin's script focuses on the fallout — not the origin story. Inspired by The Facebook Files, a 2021 exposé by The Wall Street Journal, the movie will dive into Facebook's global chaos machine: misinformation, teen mental health, algorithmic doomscrolling, and everything in between.

So don't expect more depositions and dorm rooms. This is Facebook post-Black Mirror, post-Jan. 6, post-everything.

Who's In?

Jesse Eisenberg? Probably not. Despite earning an Oscar nomination for playing Zuckerberg, he recently said he'd prefer not to keep playing the guy who's spent the last decade becoming the poster child for internet ruin. Eisenberg's doing just fine elsewhere — his indie film A Real Pain with Kieran Culkin made waves — and he's not racing to get back into Zuck's sneakers.

Andrew Garfield? Maybe. He's said he'd love to return in some form, though with the sequel's ensemble format, Sorkin may be aiming for new faces to tell broader stories. The follow-up won't be about one guy building an empire — it'll be about the system breaking people under it.

Why Now?

Because the world has changed. The original film came out in 2010, when Facebook was still mostly a way to stalk your ex. Since then, Zuckerberg bought Instagram, launched Threads, and watched his platform get dragged into everything from election misinformation to global violence. It's no longer about what he built — it's about what it did.

Sorkin seems ready to take that on. And yeah, good luck topping the original, which won three Oscars, made $226 million worldwide, and arguably gave us the last truly great tech drama before everything just became TikTok explainers.

What We Know So Far:

  • Title: The Social Network Part II (working title)
  • Writer/Director: Aaron Sorkin
  • Studio: Sony Pictures
  • Focus: Based on The Facebook Files from The Wall Street Journal (2021)
  • Confirmed cast: No one yet

Whether it sticks the landing or not, one thing's clear: Facebook broke the world enough to justify a sequel. Let's just hope the movie doesn't get ratio'd.
