Isabelle de Merteuil is in serious trouble: she is been accused of bigamy, while Valmont is being investigated for using a fake name. On the advice of Rosemonde (some listings call her Rosamunde, same person), Isabelle pushes Valmont toward a classic bad idea with a purpose: seduce the judge's wife. The thinking is, that affair could help them expose the judge. As if that was not risky enough, a former friend of Valmont turns out to be the key witness against them, so the duo spin up a plan to tilt his testimony their way. Subtle? Not remotely.
