The Roses just hit theaters, and fans are already obsessed with its soundtrack.
If you walked out of The Roses thinking, wow, that chaos sounded weirdly precise, that would be Theodore Shapiro doing his thing. The guy knows exactly when to go quiet and when to lean into the spiral, and this movie gives him plenty of runway.

Directed by Jay Roach, The Roses is a sharp, satirical dark comedy led by Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. It is loosely adapted from Warren Adler's book The War of the Roses. The cast around them is stacked too: Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, Zoe Chao, and Ncuti Gatwa all show up.
The setup: Theo and Ivy look like the perfect couple, but, of course, they are not. One partner chases career glory while the other holds down the home front. Years later, those roles flip, old resentments bubble up, and the blame game turns into a demolition derby. Things get ugly fast.
Why the soundtrack hits
Roach and Shapiro are back together again here, and it shows. Shapiro, a Primetime Emmy winner whose credits run from Tropic Thunder and The Intern to Severance and Yellowjackets, threads the needle between melancholy and mayhem. The album runs 22 tracks deep, and there are some fun curveballs: Susanna Hoffs teams with Rufus Wainwright on a cover of Happy Together, Hoffs pops up again with Eric D. Johnson on Love Hurts, and yes, Benedict Cumberbatch and Andy Samberg jump in on a remix. That last bit is the kind of inside-baseball flourish this movie quietly tucks in.
