The Real Reason Alan Ritchson’s War Machine Skipped Theaters

Alan Ritchson just delivered another bruiser, but if you were waiting to see War Machine on the big screen in the U.S., that ship never left the dock. Lionsgate opted to drop it straight on Netflix here after a brief theatrical detour overseas. The call came from the top, and the reasoning is very 2026.

Why War Machine skipped U.S. theaters

Erin Westerman, President of Lionsgate's Motion Picture Group, says the original plan was a theatrical roll-out. But once their team started talking to international buyers, the streaming cash and enthusiasm were hard to ignore. So Lionsgate huddled with producing partner Todd Lieberman and star Alan Ritchson and flipped the strategy.

'Our intention was to make it theatrically... and then when our sales team went out to start conversations with the international buyers, the streaming market was just so frothy... we all chose together to go to Netflix.'

Worth noting: all of this happened after Ritchson's breakout with Reacher on Prime Video, which does not hurt when you are shopping an action title to streamers looking for a sure thing.

Why Netflix, specifically?

Plenty of platforms circled, and Lionsgate could have kept it theatrical. According to Westerman, one factor tipped the scales.

'I would say first and foremost passion... their passion won out, and they were tremendous partners. And it was a negative pickup for them, so the movie was greenlit, and they just jumped in as the distributor.'

A little shop-floor detail there: Netflix boarded after the greenlight and handled distribution. Simple, clean, and very much how a lot of mid-to-big action plays get made now.

So, did it work?

So far, yes. War Machine landed solid notices from critics and sits at 69% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also shot to the top of Netflix's daily movie chart, per FlixPatrol, which tracks what people are actually pressing play on.
