Thus far, 2023 has been an absolute disaster for popular TV series.

Why? For starters, it appears that productions are struggling mightily to maintain some of their leading stars. From Yellowstone to Chicago Fire, cast drama appears to be the norm these days. Unfortunately, casting conflicts have also carried over to The Night Agent.

Showrunner Shaw Ryan insists that The Night Agent is not suffering from the same drama as other, extraordinarily popular shows in the streaming universe. Nonetheless, when speaking regarding the future of the show in season two, Ryan was adamant that there will be significant changes.

Fortunately, this does not suggest the same drama that has plagued other popular series like Yellowstone. What it does mean, however, is that some of the more prominent players from season one are not expected to appear in season two of The Night Agent. According to Ryan, the reason is to keep the premise of the TV series fresh and original.

Accordingly, viewers became endeared to White House Chief of Staff Diane Farr (Hong Chau), only to discover that she was (spoiler alert) the mole. The suspense and unexpected turns of season one left audiences salivating for more of the same. Be that as it may, Ryan told TV Line that Farr's return in season two of The Night Agent is doubtful.

'I don't think [the character returning is] safe to say,' Ryan forecasted. 'I thought [the show] told a pretty complete Diane Farr story.'

According to Ryan, the original concept of The Night Agent he pitched to Netflix was an idea that would involve multiple stories, told in different places and with other characters. As a result, there is no need to reintroduce the character, even though many fans would like to see more of that character.

Fair enough. It's sufficient to suggest that The Night Agent did a clever job of wrapping up Farr's story by the end of season one. The former Chief of Staff was arrested for her crimes, indicating she'll be doing a hard time as punishment. Therefore, the story arc has been concluded, meaning other characters from season one might also experience an exodus.

Still, it's hard to believe The Night Agent will not maintain its popularity moving into season two.

The action-thriller premiered last month and quickly emerged as the third most-viewed debuting series ever in Netflix history. It took less than a week for Netflix to respond by renewing The Night Agent for a second season.

Now, we'll have to wait to see if season two matches the hype created by an unprecedented season one.
