The Most Unrealistic Virgin River Plot Line We Don't Talk About Enough
Somehow, it has been overlooked for years…
Summary
- Season 5 of Virgin River was one of its most eventful.
- An old relationship arc has been properly processed by the audience.
- No explanation makes it convincing enough.
Over the course of its five-season run, Virgin River hasn't spanned much time story-wise, but it has seen a ton of fascinating events. Consider the most recent, fifth season, which ended with the release of the Christmas specials almost a month ago. The town was engulfed in wildfires, Mel had a miscarriage and later found her biological father, Charmaine finally gave birth to her twins, Lizzie and Denny got engaged and are expecting a baby, Wes' body was discovered, and Muriel and Cameron's passionate relationship ended up in limbo.
Needless to say, these storylines make Virgin River an exciting show that is beloved by millions of fans worldwide. But they also have an unexpected downside - older storylines get lost in their shadow. In particular, this relationship arc almost never gets enough attention, no matter how improbable it is.
Hope and Muriel's Unaffected Friendship
Virgin River's besties, Hope and Muriel, have known each other for a long time. The town's longtime mayor and Doc's secretary share a unique bond that seems unaffected by any turmoil in their personal lives. But there's a major stumbling block in this relationship that makes it hard to believe.
Early in the show, Hope and her husband, Doc, are experiencing some problems in their marriage and decide to take a break from each other. During this time, Muriel vehemently pursued the man in an attempt to have a romance with him. She dressed up for him, sporadically threw herself into his arms, and went on dates with him that were the talk of the town. However, Doc and his secretary never had an affair.
As hard as it is to believe, there's an even more unrealistic plot line. When Hope and Doc reconciled and resumed their relationship, things went back to normal between McCrea and Muriel, who acted as if nothing had happened and they were the same old best friends. Also, Muriel continued to work with and spend time with Doc, which Hope seemed perfectly fine with.
Possible Explanation
Perhaps the older characters in Virgin River have reached a level of emotional maturity where they can be considerate, understanding, and prioritize, which means they value their friendships. But that doesn't make the plot any more convincing.
After all, Hope doesn't come across as a mellow, emotionally mature person... Still, it's nice to see that all the characters involved have moved on and found a way to be happy and maintain their old relationship.
