The Most Satisfying Relationship on Young Sheldon Is Nothing You Could Imagine
This spicy and provocative relationship is a real guilty pleasure for the audience.
Summary
- Young Sheldon offers many interesting relationships to follow.
- The show's most popular character arc is anything but nice and cozy.
- The spin-off makes brilliant use of a classic comedic trope.
Unlike its predecessor, Young Sheldon has been a narratively complex show since its inception in 2017. Despite being a sitcom first and foremost, YS is brimming with the personal dramas of its many characters, who in turn have very complicated and compelling personalities. As a result, the TBBT spin-off makes for a much more wholesome and satisfying viewing experience.
In this light, it is no wonder that Young Sheldon has been one of the most popular shows on television during its impressive six-season run. A collection of the childhood stories of The Big Bang Theory's Dr. Sheldon Cooper, the spin-off explores the relationships within the titular character's family. And while Shelly is the heart of the sitcom, the show's most popular character arc has nothing to do with him.
Meemaw & George's Passive-Aggressive Rapport
It's no news to anyone who has seen at least one episode of Young Sheldon that the Coopers are not an idyllic family. In fact, it is fair to say that they are quite dysfunctional. But they still manage to maintain a warm, family atmosphere in their home. Moreover, their family dinners are something to look up to.
From Mary's encouragement to say grace to sharing daily news, these dinners are heartwarming to say the least. But they may be even more beloved by viewers for another reason. Meemaw and George's exchange of witty retorts is universally adored by viewers. And so is the entire relationship between the two characters.
A Classic Comedic Trope
Admittedly, there's something cheesy about Meemaw and George's relationship. After all, it's an example of the classic mother-in-law/son-in-law hate dynamic. But you know what they say, classics never get old. And that is definitely true for young Sheldon, as Meemaw and George's constant bickering provides ample comic relief for the audience and adds spice and zest to the story, not to mention shakes up the seemingly dormant Cooper household.
What's even more endearing is that the two characters never intend to hurt each other with their words, no matter how mean they may sound. Meemaw and George simply make fun of each other, albeit in a mean way. And let's face it, it's hilarious.
Interestingly enough, both characters seem to enjoy their tense dynamic. And since Meemaw and George are both much more relaxed than the uptight and somewhat prudish Mary, their spiteful exchanges give them a much-needed release.
Hopefully, we'll see more of their interactions in the upcoming seventh season of Young Sheldon, which premieres February 15.
