The Thor actor was benched by Yellowstone's star during the audition.

Summary

  • Although he has starred in many films, Chris Hemsworth is best known for playing Thor.
  • The actor has auditioned for the lead role in an unnamed Kevin Costner western.
  • Costner says he will consider Hemsworth for his future projects.

As is often the case, some actors become associated with a single role they played for the rest of their lives, even though they may have appeared in many other prominent productions. For example, the legendary Betty White, who sadly passed away over two years ago, appeared in many movies and TV shows during her eighty-year career, but she is most remembered as one of the Golden Girls.

The same could be said for Chris Hemsworth, who has starred in many high-profile films, but is more widely known for his portrayal of Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Outside of the MCU, however, the actor has appeared in such well-known films as Star Trek, the Snow White and the Huntsman franchise, the 2016 reboot of Ghostbusters, and in Men in Black: International. Interestingly, Hemsworth's acting résumé could have been expanded to include a Kevin Costner western, but that never happened – and for a very funny reason.

A Movie about Horses and Love

That's not a reference to Barbie, we promise, it's the gist of a Kevin Costner movie that Chris Hemsworth was once very interested in doing. In a recent interview, the actor revealed that he once auditioned for the lead role in one of Kevin Costner's westerns – Hemsworth didn't name the production – which told the story of a horse wrangler who one day meets and falls in love with a woman. As an avid horse lover, Chris Hemsworth wanted to play the role, but it turned out that Costner had already taken it.

'There was a movie, a script that I'd read and loved and was like, "I want to get that," and then someone said, "Kevin Costner has that [role],"' the Thor actor said. 'I'd love [to have] him as a director. I was like, "Goddamnit!" [I spent] an hour the other day trying to convince him and he was like, "I'm doing it, kid."'

Costner's Rejection

Kevin Costner also commented on the occasion. While the iconic western actor and director admits that he thinks Chris Hemsworth is one of the best contemporary actors, Costner prefers to flesh out the characters he creates himself while he still has the opportunity.

'If I reach a moment where I [don't] think I could do that, I would [reach out to Chris]. He's certainly one of our great leading men right now,' Kevin Costner said, adding, 'As long as I'm still young enough to play it, I'll play it.'

Hopefully we'll get a chance to see Chris Hemsworth in a western one day.
