The Greatest Letdown on TBBT? It Never Fully Explored This Plot Line
Perhaps, that's one of the major inconsistencies of the beloved sitcom.
Summary
- TBBT delved into a variety of storylines during its run.
- There is a major storyline involving Howard that has not been developed enough on the show.
- Fans think it's a shame the sitcom got rid of the storyline.
During The Big Bang Theory's extensive twelve-year run on CBS, it became the network's flagship sitcom. But when the show premiered in 2007, it wasn't a hit. Following a group of nerdy scientists from CalTech and their closest friends, it didn't initially resonate with viewers, who took a few more seasons to fall in love with TBBT.
By the time The Big Bang Theory reached the peak of its popularity, it had become the ultimate fan-favorite sitcom around the world, spanning a total of twelve seasons and spawning a super-popular spin-off, Young Sheldon, centered on TBBT's most eccentric character, Dr. Sheldon Cooper. While fans are generally pleased with how The Big Bang Theory has unfolded, there's one storyline they wish the show had really explored.
Howard Wolowitz's Half-Brother
As one of the science gang, Howard is a fascinating character who's both hilarious and off-putting. Deeply insecure, he still has the hubris to constantly harass women and make lewd jokes. However, because Howard is a total underdog from a dysfunctional family, he's widely loved by the audience. Naturally, many people appreciated the episode that briefly gave the character a family.
In Season 8, Episode 20, Howard and Bernadette are visited by a young man who turns out to be Wolowitz's paternal half-brother. Initially shocked by the news, Howard quickly comes to terms with having a relative and bonds with Josh over their seemingly familial obsession with sex when Bernadette tells her new in-law that Howard had sex with a robot.
'I have to ask. Was the robot sexy?' Josh asks Howard while being ushered out.
'It was actually just a mechanical hand,' Howard embarrassedly admits.
'That's all you need, right?' the newly found half-brother replies with a smirk.
'You are my brother!' the NASA engineer blissfully exclaims and proceeds to hug Josh.
Fans Are Upset About TBBT Not Exploring The Plot Line
Unfortunately, Josh Wolowitz was never seen or mentioned in any of the other seasons of the sitcom. So Howard never really got a family (besides his own with Bernadette and her kids Halley and Neil). In this light, it is no surprise that TBBT fans are frustrated.
'It is sad [they never went anywhere with this plot]. Josh seems like a nice guy, and he and Howard really seemed to get along at the end,' one YouTube user wrote.
Ultimately, people think it's odd to introduce a seemingly important character and then immediately abandon him.
'It's a shame they didn't develop this character any further – he could've been an interesting addition to the cast,' another YouTuber chimed in.
