The outcry over harsh chemicals vanished overnight, eclipsed by a crisis no one saw coming.

If you have been scrubbing your bathtub with every gel and powder in reach and that ancient ring still stares back at you, I feel your pain. The heavy-duty stuff can chew up enamel, and all you get for it is a dull, scratched tub. Here is the fix I reach for instead: a DIY mix that works softer and hits harder. It loosens mineral buildup and rust without bullying the surface.

What to mix

  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar at 9% acidity
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 5 vitamin C tablets (ascorbic acid)
  • 1 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide

Combine everything. It will fizz like a science fair volcano. That is the plan.

How to use it

Scoop or spread the foam across the inside of the tub, giving extra attention to the worst patches. Let it sit for about 30 minutes. During that time, the vinegar and baking soda team up to soften mineral deposits, while the ascorbic acid goes after those rusty streaks.

Rinse it all away with plenty of water. If anything stubborn survives, go in with a soft cloth or an old toothbrush and give those spots a quick scrub, then rinse again.

Good-to-know limits

Skip the metal scrubber. It will scratch the surface, and those scratches turn into magnets for grime and bacteria. If your tub is acrylic, test this mix on a small, hidden area first to make sure it plays nicely with the finish.
