The Fertilizer That Supercharges Garlic: Lush, Towering Greens and Fist-Sized Bulbs
April is prime time to supercharge your garlic: the simple feed that bulks up bulbs and powers up greens.
Garlic wakes up fast in April. The moment the snow is gone, the soil feels warm to the touch, and those first green tips poke through, you get a short window to set it up for fat bulbs and sturdy leaves. My playbook is simple: loosen, weed, then hit it with quick nitrogen. Precision matters here, and yes, it pays off later.
Step 1: Wake the bed
Loosen the soil gently to a depth of 6-8 cm. This feeds the roots with oxygen and helps them kick back into gear. Clear out the weeds while you are there so they do not steal nutrients your garlic needs.
Step 2: First feeding = fast nitrogen
Early spring feeding is all about nitrogen the plant can grab immediately. Strong leaf growth now sets the size of the bulbs you will pull later. Choose one of the mixes below and stick to the rates.
- Ammonium nitrate + magnesium sulfate: Dissolve 20 g ammonium nitrate and 20 g magnesium sulfate in 10 L water. Make shallow furrows around the cloves (about 8 cm deep), water the solution at 3 L per 1 m2, then cover with soil to hold moisture.
- Urea (carbamide): 20 g per 10 L water. Water at 2-3 L per 1 m2.
- Household ammonia: 2 tablespoons per 10 L water. A quick way to top up nitrogen.
- Mullein or nettle infusion: Dilute mullein 1:10. For nettles, steep a bucketful for a week, strain, then dilute 1:2 with water. Apply at 5 L per 1 m2.
Give garlic this kind of start and it will build a strong canopy of leaves and set big, juicy heads. Simple, measured, and very effective.
