The Conjuring: Last Rites tightens its grip on the box office, extending its reign as audiences flock for more frights.

Well, that escalated quickly. After landing the biggest global opening ever for a horror movie, The Conjuring: Last Rites is still chewing through the box office like it skipped breakfast.

The money

The final Conjuring movie has now cleared $400 million worldwide, according to MovieWeb. That puts it ahead of a bunch of 2025 heavy hitters:

  • Sinners: $366.7 million
  • Final Destination Bloodlines: $313 million
  • Weapons: $263.6 million
  • 28 Years Later: $151.2 million

If you saw one report slip in a stray reference to The Conjuring: First Rites, yeah, that was a typo. This is the swan song: Last Rites.

Honestly, none of this is a shocker. The Conjuring is already the highest-grossing horror franchise ever, so a monster final lap tracks.

Meanwhile, the reviews...

Critics are lukewarm. Last Rites sits at 59% on Rotten Tomatoes. Our review landed at 2.5 stars: we called it a louder, bloodier, more in-your-face entry that leans closer to Insidious and even Evil Dead than the series usually does. It moves at a clip despite the beefy 135-minute runtime, but for a farewell chapter it just doesn’t feel bold or memorable enough, and it misses the franchise’s signature chill.

Inside baseball: ending on their terms

Director Michael Chaves told us the goal was to wrap the series while it was still on top, not keep grinding until audiences tuned out.

"I think you want to end on a high point. I think it was something that everybody had the confidence to say, you know, we’re in a great space with this, with a series, and we don’t want this to be a series that just kind of gets [run] into the ground. We wanted to end with confidence and on our own terms."

The Conjuring: Last Rites is in theaters now.
