The Conjuring: Last Rites saved a few surprises for the very end, hiding cameos most viewers never even noticed.

Horror loves a curtain call, and The Conjuring: Last Rites takes that literally. The ninth and final Conjuring movie closes things out with a full-on victory lap of familiar faces, the kind of cameo parade that makes longtime fans point at the screen like the Leo meme.

How the finale sets it up

After Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) fend off a demon that targets their family, they do what any demon-battered parents would do: clean up and head to church. It is the wedding of their daughter, Judy (Mia Tomlinson), to Tony (Ben Hardy), which becomes a cleverly staged roll call of the franchise.

The cameos you probably clocked (or missed)

  • In the pews: Carolyn Perron (Lili Taylor) and her daughter Cindy (Mackenzie Foy) from the first Conjuring. Nice deep-cut nod to where this all started.
  • Also in attendance: Peggy Hodgson (Frances O'Connor) and her daughter Janet (Madison Wolfe) from The Conjuring 2. Because if anyone deserves a peaceful wedding ceremony, it is that family.
  • From The Devil Made Me Do It: David Glatzel (Julian Hilliard), the young man whose possession kicked off that case, turns up as well.
  • At the reception: franchise co-creator and producer James Wan pops in. A little inside baseball, but fitting for the sendoff.
  • Also spotted celebrating: Natalia Safran (producer Peter Safran's wife), plus a few other behind-the-scenes regulars for the final bow.

Who made this farewell

The Conjuring: Last Rites is directed by Michael Chaves from a screenplay by Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing, based on a story by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and franchise architect James Wan. The ensemble includes Elliot Cowan, Madison Lawlor, Orion Smith, Beau Gadsdon, Peter Wight, Kate Fahy, and Kila Lord Cassidy, among others.
